Water Conservation Measures in Response to Drought Conditions
Smoky Hill Metropolitan District is actively implementing several water conservation measures in response to ongoing drought conditions across Colorado:
- Reducing irrigation in peripheral park areas and allowing grass to grow longer to create natural shade, which helps minimize water loss through evaporation
- Ensuring all 6 existing irrigation controllers have fully functioning rain sensors to prevent watering during or immediately after rainfall
- Installing new rain sensors on irrigation systems along Buckley and Smoky Hill where they were not previously in place
- Coordinating with CoCal Landscape to perform an additional spring aeration to improve soil absorption and reduce surface water evaporation
- Applying Revive water dispersant to help water penetrate deeper into the soil and support stronger root growth
- Exploring grant opportunities with Arapahoe County Environmental Center to offset the cost of upgrading irrigation controllers
- Collaborating with ECCV to identify additional drought mitigation strategies, including improving soil health and supporting beneficial soil microbes that naturally retain and manage water more efficiently
